Maths - geometry

We have been learning about shapes and position words. Position words tell us where something is or where it is going. 

We use words like: On the cushion, on the mat, In front, behind, the back of the class, around, under, beside, between, middle, on top, in, through, out, off. 
We have also learned about turns and can make full and half turns. Quarter turns were new for us and can be tricky.

Task: Pick a picture of the blocks in a pattern (dont show your buddy). Using our maths words describe how to make the pattern. Remember to give accurate clear instructions.

Success Criteria:
  • I use the correct names for shapes 
  • I use our maths postiton words
  • I  give clear instructions about position
  • I follow postion instructions

Eowyn, I think you do use the correct names for shapes and you are starting to use your position words. It can be tricky to use your words to tell where to put the shapes when pointing is so much easier! Keep on practising using those maths words and it will become easier. I am pleased you like making the shape patterns with a buddy, that activity and Simon says will help you to give and follow instructions using those maths position words.

Whakawhanaungatanga,



We have been learning all about whakawhanaungatanga and what it means. We think it is all about getting along better, including everybody and being in a team.

When we are showing Whakawhanaungatanga we will :

 
See:  people sharing and noticing other people

Hear:  kind words, encouraging words like "ka pai", "good job”, “can I help?"

Think about: about other people, listen and share.


Task: Listen to your buddy and learn some things about them. Work together to create a poster sharing what you have learned about each other. Remember to practise using encouraging words, to share ideas and to notice how you your buddy might be feeling. 

 Success Criteria:

  • I listened to my buddy and found out something new.
  • I shared my ideas with my buddy.
  • I show whakawhanaungatanga in and out of the playground.

What an honest reflection Eowyn, it can be tricky to say sorry. I think you are a very kind young lady and you notice how people are feeling. You show whakawhanaungatanga in and out of the classroom when you use kind words, share your ideas and help kids. Keep it up!

My first post

 My favourite thing is to listen to stories because I love stories. When I grow up I want to be an artist because I like art.
I like chalk because it is fun because layed the square in colours.
I can see you love listen to reading as you choose it during i-time. Listening to reading helps you to grow as a reader. You have already created some beautiful pieces of art this year and I am looking forward to seeing the rest of your art this year!
